Sounders, Whitecaps Oldtimers Fit to Be Tied
August 21, 2000

SEATTLE (Aug. 21) -- In a contest where the outcome was very much secondary to the cause, oldtimers from the original Seattle Sounders finished in a 2-2 tie with their Vancouver Whitecaps counterparts in the first game of the 2000 Kevin Jones Cup Monday night at Interbay Stadium.

Jones, the Bellevue Christian High School boys and girls coach, is battling ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and proceeds from the event are directed toward his mounting medical costs. A preliminary estimate is that ticket sales, donations and a halftime auction had raised more than $70,000.

The Sounders scored the mini-game's first and final goals, with Gary Heale and Chance Fry doing the honors. Vancouver took a 2-1 lead after 28 minutes on goals by Fran O'Brien and Ralph Black. Seattle's lineup included three members of the old North American Soccer League franchise's opening night lineup: Jimmy Gabriel, David Gillett and Pepe Fernandez.

Rules were liberally interpreted for the match. Not only did the Sounders use the services of Amanda Cromwell, a former member of the U.S. women's national team, but at times they used as many as 19 players on the field at once. Cliff McCrath, Seattle Pacific University men's coach, and former Sounders coach Alan Hinton, even conspired, at one point, to take a second ball onto the field.
